What Transformation Do We Want to Create in Benin?

Half the population in Benin still live with less than $2 a day. This is partly due to a large gap between the tools provided by the formal education system and the skills needed by individuals and communities to prosper. Opportunities to transition from school to professional employment are rather scarce, a fact we are committed to change.

Education-Employment Gaps

Only 35% of children in Benin are likely to finish middle school.

Only 7% (4% in rural areas) will graduate from high school.

Only 1 in 10 secondary schools in the public system teach practical knowledge to their students.

The educational curriculum in Benin does not teach values and subjects such as volunteerism, community development, civic engagement, and leadership.

93% of students who get a job after leaving the education system are likely to be employed in the informal sector, with no legal protection, no healthcare coverage, and no retirement plan.
Beninese people who manage to succeed in life rarely organize to give back to their communities, thus perpetuating a cross-generational cycle that holds back individuals and communities.

What Do We Intend to Achieve in Benin?

What Do We Intend to Achieve in Benin?

Strengthen the connection between education, employment, community development, and economic prosperity in Benin.

We expect our personal development training and mentorship programs to equip our students with the tools they need to succeed in life. As our students succeed, they will inspire others.

Our early focus on leadership and social activism will inspire students to see themselves as future leaders who are committed to building an empowered, educated, and innovative Benin.

The social entrepreneurship training and the sponsorship programs will equip the “Ladder Community” (our students, coaches, mentors, sponsors, and other stakeholders) with the conviction needed to think beyond the self to strengthen their own communities. By coaching our students to develop social projects and networking opportunities, we expect our programs to improve the socioeconomic conditions in the communities involved.

We expect the success of our model to inspire the government to integrate our after-school programs into the formal education system. Doing so would ultimately make education more attractive and productive in Benin.

The job shadowing and internship opportunities will help improve the quality of our graduates as prospective employees in the private sector.
